Chakalma

চাকলমা হাট

A village. A haat. A marketplace born from the heart of Bangladesh.

Our Origin

A real place.
A real market.

Every Monday and Thursday, my father would take me to the চাকলমা হাট. We would go together and spend hours there — walking through the stalls, picking things out, carrying bags home full of whatever caught our eye. Those mornings had a particular feeling: the bustle of people arriving from nearby villages, the sound of bargaining, the smell of fresh produce laid out on mats and wooden tables.

What I remember most is the pond. Right in the middle of the market — a big pond, and the whole হাট is arranged around its dam. Stalls on every side, sellers calling out, children running along the edge. Walking around that pond with my father, watching the market from every angle, was one of the most refreshing, joyful things about those days. It did not feel like an errand. It felt like a celebration.

This platform exists because that place exists. Chakalma the website is built for the people who show up at Chakalma the haat — and for every small-town market, every local shop owner, and every everyday buyer across Bangladesh who deserves the same ease that city markets take for granted.

"বাবার সাথে হাটে যাওয়া, পুকুরের পাড় দিয়ে হাঁটা — এই স্মৃতিগুলোই চাকলমার জন্ম দিয়েছে।"

Understanding the Haat

What is a haat?

Bangladesh has two kinds of markets. If you're unfamiliar with rural South Asia, the distinction matters — and it's the whole reason Chakalma exists.

Everyday Bazaar / দোকান

Permanent shops,
open every day

A bazaar (বাজার) is a fixed marketplace — shops with walls, a permanent location, and regular operating hours. You know it'll be there tomorrow. This is the model most e-commerce platforms are built around.

Haat / হাট ← this is us

Weekly open-air market,
a community event

A haat is a scheduled market that comes alive on a specific day or two each week — then disappears. Farmers bring fresh harvest. Artisans bring crafts. Traders set up temporary stalls. The whole community gathers. It's as much a social occasion as a commercial one, and it has been this way for centuries.

হাট দিনে সবাই আসে — everyone comes on haat day

Bangladesh has thousands of haats. Many have run for over a hundred years. Chakalma is named for one of them — and built to bring this institution into the digital age without losing its soul.
